Drinking the "appropriate" drinks
Im 33 weeks pregnant today. Im a part of a birthing board on babycenter.com where women and some men can come and ask questions, get advice, offer advice and well sometimes just cause lots of drama! I have learned some very helpful things but you kind of have to weed through the crap to get there! Tonight I read a post on caffeine. Someone was 30 weeks pregnant and wanted to know how much caffeine people were drinking and that she had just started drink one cup of coffee a day but that she would stop by 36 weeks so as not to harm the baby. Which really is her decision! I however did things differently. I wasnt able to have caffeine through the first trimester of both my pregnancies because it would make the RLS WAY worse! But as I moved into the 2nd trimester, I would have to have the caffeine to make the RLS better. I know its weird but that's pregnancy for ya! Anyways, here's what really bothers me. People get in a tizzy fit when they find out you were drinking caffeine, aspartame, or any other kind of sweetner. They tell you how horrible it is for your body and for your baby. That you are doing more harm then anything. I asked my dr, and he said in moderation I was ok with caffeine and my crystal light tea which has aspartame. However, those same people who are so dead set against caffeine and sweetners will say that drinking alcohol is ok. Starting in the first trimester. That it's good even! Even though studies have shown that they have no clue how little or how much alcohol you have to consume in order for your baby to get fetal alcohol syndrome. I mean, that's horrible! I would never want to even take a chance and have a drink! Im terrified that my child would get FAS!! And yet I drink caffeine/aspartame which to some people is worse then alcohol even though FAS is a WAY worse result then anything that would come from caffeine/aspartame! How does that even make sense?? Your willing to risk your child's life just so you can have a drink?? Really?? If I had someone come to me and say that baby's born from mother's who drank aspartame got cancer within the first 3 years of their life, I wouldnt drink it in a heart beat! The risk to my child is very important and if it could cause some serious damage, Im not going to risk it at all! So why am I being criticized for drinking something that isnt really the healthiest when people around me drink alcohol and are completely fine with it!! Doesnt really seem fair to me in my honest opinion. But really, I guess I have no clue what Im talking about right?? I drank pepsi all through Chloe's pregnancy as well as crystal light tea. I drink pepsi every day now and cant drink the tea. My tummy no likey anymore! But my daughter is healthy, strong, and growing everyday! My son in my tummy has been healthy and strong and growing everyday! But I also havent had any alcohol and will not have any alcohol till Im done nursing! It's not the end of the world to not have a drink, and really, my child's health is WAY more important then some alcoholic drink!
